Headquartered in Assendelft, the Netherlands, Marvelution is one of the most trustworthy and renowned companies venturing into the space of open-source software. The company provides an extensive and innovative collaboration of a widely used and highly popular software — Jenkins.
The Motivating Factor
In 2007, Marvelution was launched by Mark Rekveld by inspiring through his hobby. Mark used to work on numerous open-source projects to enhance his knowledge. Gradually, one thing was backed by another and Mark started working on his view on how Jenkins (Hudson at the time) and Jira could be better integrated. However, this innovative project was quickly adopted by more than 3000 companies and projects across the globe. Then in 2015, Mark got the opportunity to establish Marvelution that would further better the Jenkins Integration for the Jira app while also adding support for Jira Data Center and Jira Cloud.
About the Leader
Mark Rekveld is the Founder of Marvelution. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Informatics in February 2007 and started working with one of the bigger IT consulting firms in the Netherlands. Then after, he worked with some smaller firms as well while playing in a consulting, developer, and product owner role always prior to starting Marvelution in 2015.
Mark adds, “I enjoy coding and want to get all the little details right. Jenkins Integration for Jira is an example. It started with solving my own problem. I felt the integration process between Jenkins and Jira was inefficient so I built ways for me to do less work. It has never been one magic thing; it is many little things I have added over time that I have learned with the help of the Jenkins and Jira communities. I initially focused on Java software development after getting a bachelor’s degree in Informatics. I care about lean development and being a member of the open-source community.”
Outstanding Products & Services
Marvelution primarily focuses on its Jenkins Integration for the Jira app. The Jenkins Integration for Jira app offers insight into issues and their relationship with builds in Jenkins. The Integration for Jira app allows Jira users, developers, release managers, QA engineers, and alike, to vastly see the status of problems to make informed decisions.
Where the competitors use issue comments to link Jenkins builds to Jira issues, Marvelution uses custom view elements added to Jira to show this information. The prime benefit of this strategy is that the comments don’t get flooded which makes it hard to find customer/user comments.
The current endeavour of Marvelution is its Reporting Engine. This new engine has the goal of allowing users to define reports on Jenkins deata within the context of Jira. The report would then be updated either manually or through an automation rule.
Its previous endeavour was to develop an automation engine that would help administrators to configure a rule that should be executed when a build or job is synchronized to Jira. This would allow us to simply create, and release, a version in Jira if the release build was successful. Or automatically transition an issue if a developer starts working on it.
The Magnificent Process
Marvelution strongly believes to have a single source of truth and a single place to manage this truth. The company has opted to place this source of truth in Jira where users can configure and maintain the integration. Competitors tend to use the Jenkins build pipeline where users can configure the integration. This will result in the source of truth being distributed across the CI/CD landscape while making it tough to maintain.
The Bright Future of Marvelution
Marvelution on its journey will keep innovating and will bring marvelous solutions to the customers. Undoubtedly, Mark loves to connect with his customers and know their feedback to improve the app user experience.
“Company growth may be part of this future, isn’t a goal or mission by itself, but will be decided if/when it is needed to continue to support customers”, says Mark.
Regarding the work of the company, Mark adds, “Marvelution at this time doesn’t adopt a marketing strategy. Its users and customers have always found Marvelution either through the Atlassian Marketplace or through web searches. Whenever some searches for Jira and Jenkins or how to integrate the two Marvelution has always been among the top results. Till now there was no need to develop a marketing strategy.” Marvelution has received amazing feedback from customers which said that the deployment of the Jenkins Integration for Jira has made it quite easier for them to answer questions as compared to the previous time-consuming experience.
